Being politically correct

What is the matter is with these politicians ?? I was just going into the bathroom to brush my teeth & suddenly my wandering eyes happened to fall on a piece of news that was at best "alarming". This is how it went in big block letters OBC'S TO GET 49.5 % RESERVATIONS IN IITs & IIMs. As far as my memory serves me, didn't these guys already have 25-27 % reservation in some 20 odd universities.
I have nothing against people from backward classes and am no racist. But this whole incident has made me sit down & think. By this millions of deserving students might miss out on valuable seats in these institutions. As far as I'm concerned this is just a move to gain political mileage by the ministry. I have personally experienced this two years ago during my EAMCET, when a friend of mine with a humongous 5-digit rank ended up doin civil engg in Osmania University and well all of you know where I ended up... MGIT. But no regrets... LIFE IS GOOD. Getting back to the point the whole move of giving these backward caste guys a small reservation is a good idea, since many of them may not have the adequate finances to go about their studies. But a whopping 49.5 % scares the living daylights out of me. This might turn out to be a big blow to all big institutes since now the quality of their output will definitely be lower since the quality of the input due to this reservation will be lower.
A solution I propose for this is that the Govt. should make some kinda law in which the students with lesser financial resources would be given reservation coz not all these guys from backward castes are poor & not all forward caste people are rich. So I think there should some sort of assessment of assets of the candidate & according to that they should be given reservation, privileges etc.
Concluding by saying that equality in society cannot be achieved by providing the less-privileged with golden spoons & the well- to- do with steel spoons.

baap me no racist either but i kindas agree with u as the quota as usual will be used by the Cream of that segment ............... it kinda pissed me off when i had to have a paid seat but some guy whose dad is a multimillionare got a free seat (he had a rank 3 times mine)jus b'cos he fell into the reservation segment .................

i think we can do better and instead of reservation we can waveoff the fee for ppl below a particular income segment (this will have actual upliftment of the backward)

To a large extent, I agree with you. Reservations should be given to people who really are backward, mainly in economic terms. Instead of a reservation system based solely on caste terms, there can be a new system which takes into account not only the caste but also the income and economic history of the family the student is coming from.

This is what is happening in the case of OBCs in the civil services examination atleast, in which if you fall into the creamy layer as defined by the NCBC, you are not eligible for reservation and you are required to apply under "General Category". I'm an OBC and this is exactly what I did and I feel good about it. Heh, I dont need any reservation. :p

Now, my question is why isnt the same system implemented in the case of SCs and STs?

Btw, I dont think increasing the reservation quota to 49% in the IIMs and the IITs will affect the quality of these institutes. Sure, their quality may be affected by the kind of students they admit but if the quality of students becomes the whole criteria, then you're stripping away the competitiveness of the faculties and the facilities of these institutes. If they're really good, they'll still produce quality graduates and the nature of the admission process to these institutes is so competitive that you still have to be pretty good to qualify even for reservation.

The question, therefore, is not of quality but of fairness. A lot of forward caste people are complaining and apparently there is truth in their reasoning that the lower castes will gain at their expense. But you must realize that by increasing the reservation to the lower castes, they didnt shut the door entirely to you. You can still qualify... only that the competition will be 25% tougher. Then again, if you're really good, you'll get through - same thing for the OBCs who are going to get reservation.

Some people are even worried about India!

This argument of mine doesnt not, however, mean that I support this hike in reservation. I'm opposed to the very system we have in place currently. I'm only saying its effect will not be as bad as is being portrayed. I'm not an enemy of affirmative action too. Instead, I feel we need an entirely new reservation system which will be much more practical and one which actually will do its job.

Phew, you know what... this comment has become as big as a post and therefore, it'll become a full post in my blog. :p

On the other hand, one can understand the timing of this move - elections are ahead. So, it seems it was entirely politically motivated than by sympathy towards the backward classes.
